As I lay upon my sickridden bed unable to talk,
Not able to run or walk,
All I can do is turn my eyes toward Heaven.
Send’n smoke signals to my Heavenly Father.

Some days the pain is too much to bear.
And so helpless I lay there,
All I can do is turn my eyes toward Heaven,
Send’n smoke signals to my Heavenly Father Who cares!

I’m send’n smoke signals to Heav’n.
Dear Lord, hear my cries
As You look into my eyes,
As I’m send’n my smoke signals to Heav’n!

Higher & higher past the soft pillowy clouds as a dove
My smoke signals flow thru the portals of Heaven above
Leavn’ the message: “Come on down, Lord, and touch me today!
Send’n Your Holy Spirit to blow my smoke signals away.

On April 30, 1995 dad was asked as he laid in the Intensive Care Unit on life support as he awoke from the coma after colon surgery, “Are you praying to God?” He wrote on a clipboard. “Smoke signals” and pointed to Heaven. We asked him if he meant he was sending smoke signals to heaven in prayer. He shook his head yes. So, on the plane home from our visit to Pennsylvania I wrote this song and I dedicate it to him.

Psalm 34:15, 17, 18, 19 – “The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.”

Psalm 39:12, 13 – “Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears…O spare me, that I may receive strength, before I go hence, and be no more.”
